Citizenship

ACQUIRING MOLDOVAN CITIZENSHIP THROUGH RECOGNITION

 

Persons residing abroad, who were born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova or whose parents or grandparents were born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, or people who were deported or displaced from the territory of the Republic of Moldova, starting with June 28, 1940, as well as their descendants can acquire Moldovan citizenship through recognition.

 

  1. In this regard, the applicant shall submit, in person, to the Embassy the following documents:
  2. Application form to be completed and signed in 3 copies;
  3. autobiography (will include information about the date and place of birth, date of leaving the Republic of Moldova, occupation and place of residence);
  4. 4 color photos 2*2 inches;
  5. birth certificate;
  6. national ID card, original and 2 copies of it;
  7. certificate of marriage/divorce or court decision on divorce;
  8. certificate of death of the spouse (only for widows);
  9. certificate of first name/last name change (only in case of change other than through marriage or divorce);
  10. birth certificate of children under 18 years;
  11. certificate of birth of parents or grandparents or a document that confirms the fact of deportation from the territory of the Republic of Moldova starting with June 28, 1940. In case of deceased persons, the death certificate should be also presented;
  12. criminal records from the country of residence;
  13. receipt of payment of consular fee 

 

In case if only one parent acquires Moldovan citizenship with a minor child, the consent of the other parent, authenticated by a notary*, has to be submitted.

 

In case of recognition of the Moldovan citizenship for minor children aged between 14 and 18 years, their consent, authenticated by a notary*, has to be submitted.

 

*Note: All documents performed by a notary have to be translated into Romanian language and have to be legalized by Apostille stamp. Processing time for the request is approx. 6 months. After obtaining the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova and if you have civil status documents issued by foreign authorities which were issued after August 17, 2001, a procedure for transcribing the civil status acts has to be followed, in order to obtain Moldovan civil status papers. 

 

REGAINING MOLDOVAN CITIZENSHIP

 

The persons, who have renounced citizenship of the Republic of Moldova and reside legally abroad, can regain citizenship of the Republic of Moldova.

 

For this they need to submit, in person, to the Embassy the following documents:

 

  1. Application form completed and signed, in 3 copies;
  2. autobiography, indicating the period of residence in the Republic of Moldova and the time of leaving for residing abroad, data on marital status, place of residence, work activity, data on close relatives: parents, spouse, children, reason of loss of citizenship;
  3. certificate from the place of residence on family members in the household;
  4. certificate on renunciation of citizenship or copy of the decision on withdrawal of citizenship of the Republic of Moldova;
  5. copy of the identity document;
  6. four photos, size 2x2 inches;
  7. criminal record in the country of residence;
  8. receipt of payment of consular fee. 

 

In case of need to confirm the information provided in the application form, the Embassy reserves the right to request additional documents: copies of identity documents, copies of birth certificates of minor children, copies of adoption, marriage, divorce, death certificates, and court decisions, authenticated as required. Processing time for the request is approx. 6 months. 

 

RENOUNCING OF MOLDOVAN CITIZENSHIP

 

Moldovan nationals legally residing abroad may renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova.

 

For this, they have to submit, in person, to the Embassy the following documents:

 

  1. Application form completed and signed, in 3 copies;
  2. autobiography (will contain information about the date, place of birth and other biographical data, including those of minor children in case if they renounce, too, the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, current and previous citizenships, years of admittance and completion of education, places of employment including hiring and firing date, date of departure from the Republic of Moldova, date and basis of obtaining the residence permit, date of obtaining the authorization from the Moldovan authorities to establish permanent residence abroad, data on marital status, place of residence, information on parents, spouse, children (date and place of birth, current place of residence, citizenship);
  3. Moldovan passport for foreign travelling, photo page and page no 6 with the stamp on establishing permanent residence in the country of stay + copy;
  4. birth, marriage and/or divorce certificates, of the certificate on change of first name and/or last name, if applicable, of the death certificate of his/her spouse, if applicable + copies;
  5. birth certificate of children aged under 18 years; + copy;
  6. certification of possession or acquisition of citizenship of another state or guarantee of the acquisition of another citizenship, valid for at least one year from the time of application;
  7. certificate from the place of residence on family members in the household;
  8. 4 photos, size 2x2 inches;
  9. Receipt of payment of consular fee.  

 

Parents that renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova can apply for maintaining the Moldovan citizenship for their children.

 

In case if you want to renounce the citizenship together with your minor children (under age of 18 years) in addition to the above mentioned documents, the next will be attached:

 

  • written declaration, authenticated by a notary, of the child aged between 14 and 18 years on his consent for renunciation of citizenship together with his parent and notary certified copy of his birth certificate;
  • in case if both parents are citizens of the Republic of Moldova and one of them is renouncing the citizenship together with his/her minor child, the notarized consent of the other parent has to be presented.

 

Civil status acts (birth / marriage / divorce certificates), issued by the competent authorities of other states after August 17, 2001, has to be transcribed. Documents issued in languages other than Romanian or Russian will be presented with a notarized translation into one of these languages All actions performed by the notary have to be translated into Romanian and legalized with Apostille stamp. The processing time of the application is approx. 1 year.
